The Kubicek laboratory at CeMM, Research Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna, is recruiting a highly motivated Research Technician working on the interface of cell biology, epigenetics and chemical biology.

In this position you will work as part of an ERC-funded team together with students and postdocs in the Kubicek laboratory to explore the role of small molecules to control chromatin structure and gene expression. In addition, you will support collaborative screening projects within the Platform Austria for Chemical Biology. This platform gives access to state of the art instrumentation (including automated microscope, plate reader, liquid handling workstation, plate washer, dispensers) and a library of approximately 92,000 substances. Your tasks include developing and optimizing innovative biochemical and cell biological assays, and analyzing the generated multidimensional data. Thus, you will be trained to become an expert in a variety of techniques, including chemical and genetic screening, proteomics and epigenomics. Join our international team of scientists and work in an innovative research environment and collaborate closely with other groups at CeMM.

Your profile

  • A degree in biology, chemistry or biotechnology (MTA, CTA, B.Sc., M.Sc., Mag., DI)
  • Previous experience with molecular, cellular or chemical biology
  • Expertise in high-throughput screening, bioinformatics, genome editing, small molecule probe development, and epigenetics is considered a plus
  • Excellent English skills
  • High accuracy and reliability
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills

The laboratory

The Kubicek laboratory is working on the role of chromatin in the definition of cell types and cell states, and the use of chemistry to modulate epigenetic states. The ERC-funded project “Chromabolism” focuses on a systematic understanding of the role of chromatin-bound central metabolic enzymes in the regulation of gene expression.

Recent publications uncover the roles of epigenetic factors and small molecule drugs in pancreatic islet cell identity (Li et al. Cell 2017, Li et. al EMBO Rep. 2016,), and cancer cell proliferation (Schick et al. Nat. Genet. in press, Sdelci et al. Nat. Genet. 2019, Licciardello et al. Nat. Chem. Biol. 2017, Sdelci et al. Nat. Chem. Biol. 2017).

The institute

We are a group of 150 scientists from 45 nations situated in a beautiful, bright and perfectly designed building (inaugurated in 2011). We have state-of-the-art technologies and are neighbours with one of the largest research hospitals in Europe. Vienna is a fascinating capital city, with world-leading quality of life, and legendary music and culture. CeMM has been voted best place to work in academia in a 2012 survey of The Scientist, is an equal opportunity employer, and our official working language at CeMM is English.

CeMM has an established internationally-recognised track record in: (i) chemical biology; (ii) pathogen interactomics; (iii) chemical proteomics; and (iv) systems biology/network interactomics as evidenced by many publications in high-ranking international journals such as Nature, Science and Cell. In addition, the experience and knowledge of the Principal Investigators at CeMM is exceptional in posing fundamental biological questions and application of these questions in a medically relevant setting.

We offer

A challenging position in a meaningful, inspiring, international setting, with an excellent work climate and the possibility to join our social (cultural or sports) activities.
